Second Place Poem 2005

A Step Back in Time

It's 2005 and I'm standing in the Old Country Store

Its ancient walls around me

The musty smell in the air

And the sound of wind chimes from the back room

It's 1800 and I'm standing in the Old Country Store

People dropping off their mail

The noises from the meeting upstairs

And the smell of smoke from the pipes of the men

It's 1900 and I'm standing in the Old Country Store

Tired travelers buying items for the journey ahead

The clip-clop of horse hoofs outside

And the occasional scent of worn leather

It's 2005 and I'm beginning to appreciate the Old Country Store

Its ancient walls around me
